11+ Hours: Memminger to Hanauer Hütte to Boden & Imst

Third day on the Lechtaler Höhenweg started towards Hanauer Hütte at Memminger Hütte instead of Württemberger Haus like I had planned. I was behind my schedule. I needed a shortcut to get back on schedule and what followed was trail overload. The Lechtaler Höhenweg is a 10-day hike that goes across the main ridge of the Lechtaler Alps and ends at Anhalter Hütte about 100 kilometers (62 miles) later. It starts at Stuttgarter Hütte, near Lech, but you can get on and off the trail in several places. It can easily be done in less days than 10 if...

Memminger Hütte on the Lechtaler Höhenweg!

The Memminger Hütte is at the crossroads of the Lechtaler Höhenweg and the E5 trail from Oberstdorf to Meran. This makes it a very lively place but also very crowded. St. Anton to Ansbacher Hütte on the Lechtal High Trail

This article cover my first day on the Lechtaler Höhenweg: almost 3 day stages in one day leading to the Ansbacher Hütte. Last summer I looked for a strenuous 7 to 8 days’ hike within easy reach by public transportation from Munich and found the Lechtal Höhenweg. It starts at Stuttgarter Hütte, near Lech, but you can get on and off the trail in several places. You can do it in less...

Reporting From the Trail – Oberstdorf to St. Anton

Reporting and updating Gohikealps from the trail in real time doesn’t seem to be as easy as I thought. On my main trip this summer I wanted to try and although not failing miserably, I’m finding that finding the time to do this properly is difficult. Posting random photos to Facebook is easy enough but actually writing something worthy of publishing is not.  I’m sitting in a hotel room in St.Anton, Austria, writing this on my tablet. It’s pouring down rain and I’ve just spent a leisurely day here waiting out some bad weather and relaxing after walking here from...

Schlegeisspeicher – A Zillertal Gem

If you’re in or near Mayrhofen in Zillertal, make sure you visit Schlegeisspeicher. We experienced an exceptionally beautiful day hike there. Schlegeisspeicher is a beautiful reservoir lake easily accessible from Mayrhofen in Zillertal, which was our base camp. We were there already back in 2009 but I suspect not much has changed and I look forward to going there again as a part of a longer hut-to-hut hike, There are lots of day hike options around Schlegeisspeicher and it’s also on the way of several long hikes, such as the Berlin High Trail. It’s a man-made reservoir, providing water...
